Developed in the wake of World War II and in the shadow of the Cold War, the B-47 was designed to fly at high subsonic speed and at a high altitude to avoid enemy interceptor aircraft. Its primary purpose was as a nuclear bomber capable of striking the Soviet Union. With its super modern design, including the swept wing, the B-47 was on the vanguard of a new era of aircraft design that led to modern jetliners.
