Glider sailplane pocket square in true blue

Slender and long, the silent glider cuts an elegant figure in the sky. Perhaps more than any other aircraft, the glider captures the serenity and boundlessness that first inspired the race for the sky.

Soaring in a sailplane: Nothing gets you closer to the true feel of flying and being close to the clouds. The silence of the flight, the view from the large canopy, the birds joining you as you gain height circling in an updraft offer a true experience of flight.

The long, thin wings of gliders, their smooth surfaces and advaced aerodynamics enable them to cover large distances with minimum height loss. Glide rations of up to 50:1 have been achieved. In updrafts from convective clouds or mountains or hills sailplanes can gain altitude when skillfully piloted.

Gliders were the first airplanes. In the 1890s, Otto Lilienthal built gliders using weight shift for control in Germany. In the early 1900s, the Wright Brothers built gliders using movable surfaces for control.

The restrictions of the treaty of Versailles caused Germany to focus on sailplanes after WWI as no motorized aircraft were allowed for many years. Competitive soaring has become an international sport, but many pilots also just enjoy their peaceful day aloft as they soar powered just by the wind and the sun over beautiful landscapes.
